Book signings are a fantastic way to connect with readers, build your author brand, and sell books. But they can be daunting, especially if it’s your first one. Here are some tips to get you away from self doubt and into signing books like a pro!
1. Bring the Right Supplies
Don’t rely on the venue to have everything you need, because most of the time, they won’t. Pack extra pens (sharpies are my fave), bookmarks, business cards, and a small cash box if you’re selling books yourself. A sign with your name and book title can also help attract passersby. Roll-out banners are a great way to attract attention from further away.
2. Engage with Attendees
A friendly conversation goes a long way. Ask readers about their favorite genres, how they heard about your book, or if they want a personalized message. The more engaged they feel, the more likely they are to become loyal fans.
3. Promote in Advance
Let your audience know where and when you’ll be signing. Post on social media, email your newsletter subscribers, and collaborate with the venue for cross-promotion. Encourage readers to bring their copies or purchase on-site. Also make sure to post some reels while at the event and tag the book store, they already have a built in audience that you can leverage.
4. Make the Experience Memorable
Consider adding a personal touch—like a unique signature, a fun sticker, or a themed giveaway related to your book. A small keepsake can make the event more special and encourage word-of-mouth promotion. At some of my signings I give away keychains with the animals from my books and they are always a huge hit!
5. Follow Up After the Event
Post photos from your signing, thank attendees online, and engage with readers who share about the event. This keeps the momentum going and strengthens your connection with your audience.
Book signings aren’t just about selling books—they’re about creating connections. With a little preparation, you can turn your event into a memorable experience for both you and your readers.
